Clyde Profile

Clyde
Clyde.

I love travelling to experience different cultures and new places. Apart from the well-known iconic places and landmarks, I love visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites as the list also includes places that are quite off the beaten track or places I would have never visited or even read about.

My favourite WHS are a combination of cultural WHS and spectacular nature WHS. I'm not a fan of industrial WHS or modern architecture WHS but I'm always open to visit to learn something new. Since the last few years I try to cover as many top WHS as possible on the longer trips while I try to cover the remaining European WHS on shorter trips or as road trips.

Bursa and Cumalikizik

Bursa and Cumalikizik

I visited this WHS in Spring 2021. I'm glad I had done some research where to safely park my rental car upon arrival as Bursa is a very busy city all year round. The Yesil Katli indoor parking was not only safe but extremely close to the Green Tomb so I was more than happy to park there.

All of Bursa's components (except Cumalikizik and maybe those in Cekirge) are best explored on foot. Although Bursa is a very busy urban city, even during a pandemic, there are whole pedestrian areas which felt like a modern Fez or Meknes bazaar area. Most of Bursa's highlights were free of charge when I visited. I started with the great Yesil Cami and Kulliye (social and religious complex) also known as the Green Mosque and Tomb (a tall turquoise structure with more turquoise and green tiling inside) built in 1421 for Sultan Mehmet I. Almost every location has a UNESCO marker next to it and there even is a whole "square" dedicated to Bursa's inscription on the WH list (Ian's photo)

Troy

Troy

I visited this WHS in Spring 2021. The vast majority of this site are ruins and foundations of old buildings. There are no "iconic" buildings here, in fact the only "iconic" aspect of the site is the modern Trojan Horse just after the entrance which seems like a playground for children and adults alike (the one used for the film starring Brad Pitt is along the Canakkale waterfront). That said, the highlight of this site are its superimposed strata marked as Troy I-IX.

Why does Troy have so many superimposed strata? The settlement mound of Hisarlik comes into being through a combination of circumstances

Pergamon

Pergamon

I visited this WHS in Spring 2021 focusing first on the many lacklustre tumuli and the Kybele Sanctuary in the 8 locations close to Bergama town, Islamsaray and Kapikaya leaving the multi-layered (Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantium and Ottoman periods) city last.

Before driving up the steep road all the way up to the Acropolis, the Asklepeion and Red Hall (you can also take the cable car up if you don't want to drive to the top), I took in the interesting Red Hall/Temple of the Egyption Gods. When I visited, there were no apparent restrictions due to the COVID pandemic so I gladly visited these sites too before heading uphill to the Acropolis. There are old rusty brown metal UNESCO signs at most locations and the usual Turkish UNESCO WHS sign next to the Acropolis entrance.

Ephesus

I visited this WHS in Spring 2021. The main location is definitely the Ancient Site of Ephesus, but there are three other locations which make up this WHS which can be considered as minor site by comparison.

Aphrodisias

Clyde Malta - 23-Nov-21

Aphrodisias

I visited this WHS in Spring 2021 as an early day trip from Pamukkale. Unlike some other WHS and tWHS with a few or no intact remains, Aphrodisias has many monumental remains that are more or less intact and in very good condition. Even the huge amount of statues in the museum are in very good condition when compared to those in other museums which usually are missing some of their body parts.

Aphrodisias is quite a large WHS and even if you opt for a quick visit you'll surely need a couple of hours to cover the main sites and the excellent museum well. Ever since the tetrapylon of Palmyra was destroyed, I set my eyes on visiting the tetrapylon of Aphrodisias. The best time for photograpy is in the early morning when the sunlight shines on the intricate details of the remaining decoration of the tetrapylon. The monumental gateway built around 200 AD stands at the end of an ancient road that leads from the main north-south street of the town into a large forecourt in front of the Sanctuary or Temple of Aphrodite. The character of the temple building was altered when it became a Christian basilica. This temple was a focal point of the town
