Clyde Profile

Clyde
Clyde.

I love travelling to experience different cultures and new places. Apart from the well-known iconic places and landmarks, I love visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites as the list also includes places that are quite off the beaten track or places I would have never visited or even read about.

My favourite WHS are a combination of cultural WHS and spectacular nature WHS. I'm not a fan of industrial WHS or modern architecture WHS but I'm always open to visit to learn something new. Since the last few years I try to cover as many top WHS as possible on the longer trips while I try to cover the remaining European WHS on shorter trips or as road trips.

The Ancient City of Apollonia (T)

Clyde Malta - 14-Nov-22

The Ancient City of Apollonia (T)

I visited this tWHS in spring 2022 en route to Butrint from Durres. It is indeed a very big area and if you walk to all the different components of this tWHS a visit can easily take half a day. If you're pressed for time most of the highlights are close to the entrance and a quick visit to the neat museum can suffice.

L'amphitheatre de Durres (T)

Clyde Malta - 14-Nov-22

L

I visited this tWHS twice in spring 2022, just upon arrival and just before departure at Tirana International Airport which is about 30-45 minutes away by car. The amphitheatre is literally in the middle of Durres' urban sprawl, Albania's second most populated seaside city, so I don't think it has much chance of ever getting inscribed. That said, it is the largest amphitheatre in the Balkan Peninsula and has a capacity for 20,000 people.

Durres was founded by Ancient Greek colonists from Corinth and Corcyra under the name of Epidamnos around the 7th century BC in cooperation with the local Illyrian Taulantii

Lower German Limes

Clyde Malta - 22-Oct-22

Lower German Limes

I visited the Lower German Limes WHS location of Remagen in Germany in October 2021 which was one of the only open sites during the pandemic. Basically this WHS is all about scattered Roman remains or ruins so I wasn't expecting much, even though it has to be said that Remagen has a good network of several types of Roman remains or ruins which make for a pleasant loop near the Rhine with 15 stops named Stadtrundgang with information boards in English and German at each stop. The Roman Museum only has information boards in German, but English translations are provided at the entrance.

ShUM Sites

ShUM Sites

I had superficially visited the Speyer components of this WHS way back in September 2010. However, after inscription, I revisited Speyer in October 2021 specifically focusing on the ShUM sites in Speyer, namely the Medieval synagogue and ritual bath (mikvah) and the ShPIRA museum with some of the most important gravestones from the cemetery and the Lingenfeld Treasure, a mere 200 metres or so from the Speyer Cathedral. These three sites together are nicknamed Judenhof or Jewish courtyard and are open to the public everyday from 1st April till 31st October (10:00 to 17:00) and Monday to Saturday from 1st November to 31st March (10:00-16:00).

The Castle of Bashtova (T)

Clyde Malta - 10-Oct-22

The Castle of Bashtova (T)

I visited this tWHS in 2022 as a short detour en route between Durres and Berat. It really is nothing more than a large square fortress/castle with already collapsed or collapsing circular towers at each corner.

Although there are small signs clearly prohibiting it, several locals drive right through it mostly to take wedding, engagement, general photos. The only modern structure just by it is a caravan site and small cafeteria. Climbing the walls is still allowed at your own risk but it doesn't add much apart from a different angle/perspective. I don't think that the site has any OUV to make it on the WH list and if you're pressed for time, I would suggest skipping it, definitely not worth sacrificing a lot of time from the Berat WHS. As Solivagant wrote in his review, sometimes there are events with a stage and seats installed within the castle grounds, creating lots of traffic as there are only a couple of parking spaces for cars
