Philipp Peterer Profile

Since 2008 visiting WHS is my primary obsession. I started with about 40 sites I had seen without particular knowledge of their world heritage status and managed to boost this number since. It helped that I started to work for the national airline in 2010 and I had a few years where I could travel intensely. In 2012 I had my personal record year, visiting 60 sites. Between December 2010 and March 2013 I was able to visit 1 or more sites every single month. In March 2013 my son was born, so currently I’m reduced to a much slower pace and the occasional weekend escape on my own.

I really like the diversity of the list. I favor medieval related sites, industrial sites and Greek/Roman remains, if they are clearly visible. On the rear end are modern architecture and fossil sites. The true spirit of our common hobby reveals itself to me each time I visit a place I would have never dreamed of if it wasn’t for the list and turns out to be amazing, such as Sceilg Mhichíl, the Wadi Al Hitan or the Ajanta Caves.

Historic Town of Kemaliye (T)

I visited Kemaliye on a detour between Divrigi and Diyarbakir. The village is located in a huge canyon and thus only accessible from the north or the south. I approached from the north (1h20 drive from Divrigi.

The landscape is spectacular. The village is nice but not outstanding. It seems to be a known spot for hiking as there is tourist infrastructure and signs leading to different trails. There are many Ottoman style buildings, but most of them seemed new or so heavily renovated that they are not recognizable as historic buildings. The nicest feature of the village is the stream flowing through the village.

Nemrut Dag

Visited March 2022. After Nan could not make it in January due to snow, I guessed end of March should be no problem. That was a massive misjudgement. I arrived on a sunny day from Diyarbakir. My hopes were high, as there was no snow until Karadut. From there the snow started, but was not significant and the road was cleared. Unfortunately the last 6km were not cleared. But after I came so close I was reluctant to give up and decided to walk the last part. There were four other tourists with the same stupid idea with a few minutes head start. I quickly past them, following the road. I was unprepared for the amount of snow I was about to cross. I brought only trekking shoes instead of my hiking boots and a light jacket.

Mountain Chains (T)

4 of the 5 proposed mountain chains are massively off the beaten path. I managed a short visit to Gebel Dokhkhan, the only chain within a tourist area. We sort of crossed the chain twice by car, driving from Hurghada to Luxor and back, which I didn’t count. But a Quad tour through the desert brought us properly to the beginning of the mountain chain.

The OUV, specifically for this chain, is hard to gasp for me. There are rocks and tiny mountains in the desert. I am sure that some of the endemic species can actually be found, when looking long enough, but mainly it’s still rocks in the desert. If these get inscribed (I doubt it) it will be one of these places that few serious travellers but many package tourists will be able to tick off.

Dababiya (T)

The suggested OUV of Dababiya is that it is a one of the Global Standard-stratotype Sections and Points (GSSP). It’s a place where the boundary between the Paleocene and the Eocene is clearly visible. This makes it a rather geeky Paleontological site to visit, but still interesting and not less valuable. To make it a bit more reliable for other visitors, it was also used as a quarry for the buildings of nearby Luxor/Karnak temples.

The site is around 1h drive south of Luxor, along the scenic Nile route. You pass by when you do the Luxor-Aswan drive to visit the Esna/Elfu/Kom Ombo temples. Get off the Luxor-Aswan Eastern Desert Road in Ash Shaghab (crossing the only bridge over the canal) and follow the signs. It’s mostly narrow dirt roads that lead through the village and outside to the main entrance

Archaeological Site of Assos (T)

I almost missed this great Greek site, because I didn’t find the entrance first. I expected (as usual) a parking lot and an easy accessible main entrance. Unfortunately the entrance is inside the village. You need to park your car and walk up the hill, right through the village. Not knowing that I passed the village and drove down to the ancient harbour, along the fence of the archaeological site, looking for an entrance. I drove down to the ancient harbour with its tiny village and paid it a short visit. After asking in a hotel I went back to the village and found the entrance right before they were closing. After a short negotiation they let me in, mentioning the exit that could only be opened from the inside, and left
