Heritage of Mercury

Caspar Dechmann Switzerland - 21-Feb-20

Heritage of Mercury

Idrija is full of surprises: We drove there as a day trip from Ljubljana. It is about a one-hour drive through gorges and on curvy streets and then you arrive in a modern, not very appealing industrial town at the confluence of the rivers Idrijca and Nikova. Since the site was in a working state up to the 90s of the last century not much of the 500-year-old industrial history is visible on first sight. Most prominent is the miners church on a hill (mostly closed) and adjacent to it a tiny “sacred mountain” with equally tiny chapels

Great Spas of Europe (Germany) (T)

Great Spas of Europe (Germany) (T)

I have been to several of the nominated towns and while I find the topic very interesting and most towns worth a visit I feel that the nomination is to big and includes too many towns with hardly any OUV. I think it would make more sense to nominate the best example(s) and not so many candidates. A good candidate from what I can see without having been there is the Czech triangle as a separate nomination. I feel the French, Belgian and Italian candidates have very little to offer and could be left out altogether. In Germany I have been to Bad Homburg, Wiesbaden and Baden Baden. All are beautiful and a nice visit but Baden Baden sticks clearly out for me: It was the most famous of the German Spa towns and had the most famous guests

Rietveld Schröderhuis

Caspar Dechmann Switzerland - 11-Feb-20

Rietveld Schröderhuis

The Rietveld Schröder House is one of those really nice sites that make an interesting visit but that are at the same time so small that you can see them quite thoroughly in one or two hours. I went to Utrecht from Amsterdam. There is train several times an hour. From Utrecht Centraal you take tram number 8 to De Hoogstraat and walk five minutes. There you find a visitor centre in the house next to the RSH with nice books, souvenirs, bathrooms and an interesting movie about the creation of this house. You can certainly also buy tickets here but I would recommend to buy a ticket online in advance

Defence Line of Amsterdam

Defence Line of Amsterdam

If you look at our rating the Amsterdam Defence Line is not a popular WHS. In any case it offers a rather unique and interesting story which is inextricably connected to older similar defence lines, the most important of which were the Old and the New Dutch Waterline. All of them were huge enterprises including dozens of forts, dykes and sluices. They all use water which the Dutch normally have to fight against as a weapon against invading enemies

Kutna Hora

Caspar Dechmann Switzerland - 05-Dec-19

On this trip to the Czech Republic I had planned to see beside the treasure trove of Prague one new WHS and one new TWHS: The Villa Tugendhat in Brno and the Jested Tower near Liberec. None of it worked out. For the Villa Tugendhat even three weeks ahead was too late to find any space in a tour, they are now booked out for months ahead, even in wintertime. While I enjoyed Brno for its lively old town and the beautiful St. James church with its ossuary, I decided not to visit the Villa just from the the outside since the garden is hardly enjoyable in wintertime. After that we didn't do our day trip to Liberec either because the performance of two rare Rachmaninov operas that we had planned to see was cancelled. I decided instead to use that day for a short day trip to Kutna Hora.
