Klaus Freisinger

I like the concept of World Heritage, and I like to travel, so combining these two is very enjoyable. However, I don't get to travel outside of Europe that often, so my ultimate goal would be to visit all WH sites in Europe.

Medina Azahara 07-Jul-18

On a trip to Córdoba and Granada a few years ago, I visited the ruins of Medina Azahara (Madinat al-Zahra), about 8 km to the west of Córdoba (there are trips organized by the tourist office). The Caliph of Córdoba had this palace town built in the 10th century, but it only lasted a few decades. Only a fraction is excavated, but it is a fascinating archaeological site to visit and walk around in, and there is a very interesting museum. It could have been inscribed as an extension of the Córdoba WHS, but considering its great archaeological potential, it’s just as well that it is a separate site. When I was there, there was talk of a problem with a kind of shantytown nearby that authorities thought would dissuade UNESCO from inscribing the site (although I didn't see any and there was certainly none in the immediate vicinity).

Serra de Tramuntana 22-May-18

Serra de Tramuntana by Klaus Freisinger

Even though Mallorca seems to be supercrowded at all times, especially when the cruiseships come in, the island came as a pleasant surprise to me. Palma is a very nice city (and the cathedral would probably be already a WH site if it were in any other country) and the mountains are exceptionally scenic, sometimes even spectacular. The Serra de Tramuntana range is the spine of the island (and protects the beaches from the northern winds) and reaches a height of over 1,400 metres. It includes several pretty towns and various monasteries, including the huge one at Lluc. Even though it is not really easy to find out where the core zone of the WHS starts and what is only in the buffer zone, you can be reasonably sure that any trip to the northern coast will make you traverse the core zone. The site is inscribed as a cultural landscape, and it is quite easy to make out various aspects of this as you make your way through the mountains, especially the historic stone walls separating the fields, some of which date back to Arab times. I did two trips to the mountains, both of them very much on the tourist trail and likely to be offered by various agencies - the half-day trip to Valldemossa to visit the Charterhouse (of Chopin and Sand fame) and the full-day trip to Sa Calobra (very winding roads and extraordinarily scenic), followed by a boat ride to Port de Sóller, a tram ride to Sóller, and a train ride back to Palma.

Old City of Berne 08-Dec-17

Old City of Berne by Klaus Freisinger

The reviews on this site about Bern are positive, but not exactly glowing, and I don't have much to add, except to confirm that it is a very pleasant city for a nice long walk. From the beginning of the Old Town to the Bear Pits, you basically follow one long street (with a small detour to the Minster) and admire the well-preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture on each side, especially the fountains and arcades. From the Bear Pits (recently renovated and well worth a visit - free of charge), you can enjoy a great view of the Old Town and the Aare River. On a crips and sunny autumn day, I enjoyed a few hours of sightseeing in this pretty city, and my stay was enhanced by a surprise Open Day at the Swiss Parliament (happens only twice a year). Bern can be easily combined with La Chaux-de-Fonds or the Jungfrau-Aletsch site, and is just a 1-hour train ride from Zurich and Lucerne.

Riga 03-Sep-17

Riga by Klaus Freisinger

Riga was the last of 3 Baltic capitals that I visited, and I have a hard time making up my mind on which is the nicest. Vilnius is a Central European, Catholic city with Baroque architecture, similar to Krakow, while Tallinn is a Northern European, Protestant city with brick buildings. Riga is somewhere in between, reflecting its geographic position, but a bit closer in most aspects to Tallinn than to Vilnius. Like the others, it is an immaculately clean city with a fine historic centre full of interesting buildings, most of which are clustered in the medieval core (particularly the Dome Cathedral and St. Peter's Church with its lookout tower). The cherry on Riga's cake is the large Art Nouveau/Jugendstil district to the north of the centre, where you can walk around for a long time admiring the stunning facades. A good place to start is the Art Nouveau Museum, which is housed in an original buiilding and features a unique staircase. I only had a weekend in Riga, but I'm sure that you can easily fill several days exploring this interesting city,.

La Chaux-de-Fonds / Le Locle 31-Aug-17

La Chaux-de-Fonds / Le Locle by Klaus Freisinger

La Chaux-de-Fonds is located in the far west of Switzerland, a bit off the beaten track, but I combined it with Besancon (Vauban citadel) and Arc-et-Senans, as there are around 3 daily trains from Besancon. I spent half a day in La Chaux-de-Fonds (plus around 40 minutes in Le Locle, only 10 minutes away by train, but my visit was cut short by a huge thunderstorm), and I felt that this was enough to get a feel for the city. I joined a tourist train for a ride (especially useful for the residential districts located on a quite steep slope) and so could see the rectangular street layout (also well visible from the Espacité lookout tower) and some of the unique buildings of this town. I also visited the Watchmaking Museum, which was quite interesting, but only focused on watches/clocks in general, not on the city itself. Le Locle is much smaller than La Chaux-de-Fonds, but quite similar in its structure and buildings (it also has its own watchmaking museum). The WH designation is probably justified for the unique city plans and the focus on a very specific type of precision industry, away from the usual ironworks/steel mills/mining sites. The two cities are nice places to visit if you are in the area, but going out of the way for them is only something for WH collectors.
