I like the concept of World Heritage, and I like to travel, so combining these two is very enjoyable. However, I don't get to travel outside of Europe that often, so my ultimate goal would be to visit all WH sites in Europe.

Margravial Opera House

Klaus Freisinger Austria - 30-Dec-18

Margravial Opera House

With the restoration works finally complete after a long six years, the Margravial Opera House again shines in all its glory, and it is really a fascinating site to visit. Granted, from the outside, it looks rather inconspicuous - I actually walked right past it the first time. Inside, however, it is exceptionally beautiful, and you can really imagine what it must have been like to watch a performance in the 18th century. As stated below, you buy your ticket and wait for a time slot (I visited in November first thing in the morning and there were only a few people there, but when I left, it was completely crowded), then you can walk around freely. There is a short film, and a lady also went to the stage to give a little talk about the history and renovation

Medina Azahara

Klaus Freisinger Austria - 04-Jul-18

On a trip to Córdoba and Granada a few years ago, I visited the ruins of Medina Azahara (Madinat al-Zahra), about 8 km to the west of Córdoba (there are trips organized by the tourist office). The Caliph of Córdoba had this palace town built in the 10th century, but it only lasted a few decades. Only a fraction is excavated, but it is a fascinating archaeological site to visit and walk around in, and there is a very interesting museum. It could have been inscribed as an extension of the Córdoba WHS, but considering its great archaeological potential, it’s just as well that it is a separate site

Serra de Tramuntana

Klaus Freisinger Austria - 21-May-18

Serra de Tramuntana

Even though Mallorca seems to be supercrowded at all times, especially when the cruiseships come in, the island came as a pleasant surprise to me. Palma is a very nice city (and the cathedral would probably be already a WH site if it were in any other country) and the mountains are exceptionally scenic, sometimes even spectacular. The Serra de Tramuntana range is the spine of the island (and protects the beaches from the northern winds) and reaches a height of over 1,400 metres. It includes several pretty towns and various monasteries, including the huge one at Lluc. Even though it is not really easy to find out where the core zone of the WHS starts and what is only in the buffer zone, you can be reasonably sure that any trip to the northern coast will make you traverse the core zone

Old City of Berne

Old City of Berne

The reviews on this site about Bern are positive, but not exactly glowing, and I don't have much to add, except to confirm that it is a very pleasant city for a nice long walk. From the beginning of the Old Town to the Bear Pits, you basically follow one long street (with a small detour to the Minster) and admire the well-preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture on each side, especially the fountains and arcades. From the Bear Pits (recently renovated and well worth a visit - free of charge), you can enjoy a great view of the Old Town and the Aare River. On a crips and sunny autumn day, I enjoyed a few hours of sightseeing in this pretty city, and my stay was enhanced by a surprise Open Day at the Swiss Parliament (happens only twice a year)

Riga

Klaus Freisinger Austria - 03-Sep-17

Riga

Riga was the last of 3 Baltic capitals that I visited, and I have a hard time making up my mind on which is the nicest. Vilnius is a Central European, Catholic city with Baroque architecture, similar to Krakow, while Tallinn is a Northern European, Protestant city with brick buildings. Riga is somewhere in between, reflecting its geographic position, but a bit closer in most aspects to Tallinn than to Vilnius. Like the others, it is an immaculately clean city with a fine historic centre full of interesting buildings, most of which are clustered in the medieval core (particularly the Dome Cathedral and St. Peter's Church with its lookout tower)
