Matejicek Profile

I love exploring everything around me - thus, it is not surprising I am scientist. The important aspect of doing good science is to travel a lot...

All in all, I am travelling quite a lot, mostly around Europe. Since I like nature as well as bustling cities and quiete historical towns, the list of my visited sites is quite diverse.

Fuzina Hills in Bohinj (T)

Matejicek Czechia - 30-Jan-20

Fuzina Hills in Bohinj (T)

I visited the area around Bohinj Lake two times already. First, we did rather quick trip from the Savica waterfall uphill to the Black Lake and the mountainous plateau around Triglav, so, I could see almost nothing from the landscape proposed as TWHS. The next visit, I had enough time to explore the countryside of Stara Fuzina Hills. We spent a couple of days in the place around a stable of our friend close to Stara Fuzina village. Unfortunately, it is banned to overnight in tents in the area of Triglav National Park even on the private land and inside/close to the private buildings. The neighbors of the friend were extremely unfriendly (we met this attitude several times in Slovenia), thus, we had to escape much earlier than originally planned.

Old Synagogue and Mikveh in Erfurt - Testimonies of everyday life, religion and town history between change and continuity (T)

I think that this TWHS should be deleted or changed at least. Otherwise I do not fully understand the strategy of the state party of Germany.

There are 3 active sites on the German TWHS related directly to former Jewish communities: (1) Synagogue in Erfurt as one of the oldest, largest and best preserved synagogues in Central Europe, (2) ShUM as the important community of Ashkenazi Jews with origin deeply in Middle Ages, and (3) the cemetery in Altona as the second largest Sephardic cemetery outside Portugal.

Stralsund and Wismar

Stralsund and Wismar

Stralsund is a town of the brick gothic, the style that I like. Well, it is quite common in Northern Europe, and I could see it already in Riga, Roskilde, Brandenburg, Stendal, Tangermunde, Brugges, even in Bavarian Landshut, etc… but the examples I found in Stralsund belong to the finest ones of the style, and Stralsund reminds me the old town of Riga.

Stralsund is perfectly preserved, so, there are 3 large brick churches (Our Lady – open for free, St Nicolas – deconsecrated museum that I [...]

Old City of Berne

Matejicek Czechia - 31-Jan-20

Old City of Berne

I spent a day and a night in Bern in July 2012. It was a stop during my return after a week stay in Lausanne, then, I continued to Basel and Prague. It has been my first and only visit to Switzerland.

The city center is compactly formed by long lines of town houses with porticoes, completed by the cathedral with a huge tower. The town is confined within a bent of a turquoise river. The highlight was the view from the hill just opposing the meander (PHOTO), and also walking along the river with views up to the townhouses and the cathedral. I also liked the “water management” – it means line of fountains on the main street, and the astronomical-clock tower.

Kotor

Kotor

I visited Boka Kotorska several times already, two times as a boat trip from Herceg Novi, one time we did a short stop in Kotor during a trip to Cetinje, and last time we went by bus to small towns of Perast and Risan.

Boka Kotorska is one of the finest landscapes of Mediterranean I have ever visited, and the boat trip is probably the best way to enjoy it (PHOTO – a view fro the boat towards Perast). Unfortunately, the rest of Monte Negro coast is already spoiled by expansion of tourist resorts. The core zone of the Kotor Bay and the surrounding buffer zone within the Tivat Bay ensure the protection from the expansive development.
