Simon Penton Profile

I have joined having found this site while looking for WHS lists and proposals.
I am one of a substantial number of people who consider Glastonbury and the Isle of Avalon as being more than an average World Heritage Site. The 5000+ year old ceremonial centre has been a place of pilgrimage since the time of the Celts and probably before. The hills are landscaped in such a way that Solar alignments are clearly marked and observable. The alignment of hills includes a ceremonial road from Wearyall Hill to Chalice Hill, a Winter Solstice viewing mound on top of St Edmunds Hill, and various sanctuaries and churches were built in and around the greater site.
Glastonbury was chosen by followers of Jesus to build what is undoubtedly one of the first Christian churches in the world. Archeology has established the circle of huts and central place of worship that was built as early as 37 AD and by 63 AD. This is confirmed by church and clerical writers and historical reports.
Glastonbury is visited by tens of thousands of people every year. People of almost every nation come to Glastonbury and to visit the Abbey and Glastonbury Tor.
