The Amsterdam Canal Ring, or inner canal belt area, is probably the most distinguishable feature of the capital of the Netherlands. With its history dating back to the late 16th century, it forms the heart of the city. The Canal Ring consists of 4 main canals that surround the centre which, historically seen, served the purpose of enabling transportation and protecting the centre against hostile armies. The main canals are; Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. These canals are interconnected through several smaller channels and of course the Amstel River, where Amsterdam derived its name from.
