Budapest The Underground (“Metro”) along Andrassy Avenue is titled the “Millennium Line”. “it was inaugurated on May 2, 1896, the year of the millennium (the thousandth anniversary of the arrival of the Magyars), by emperor Franz Joseph”. (Wiki) At the far end of the Avenue lies Heroes Sq (Hősök tere) “The central feature of Heroes' Square….. is the Millennium Memorial…..Construction began in 1896 to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin and the foundation of the Hungarian state in 896, and was part of a much larger construction project which also included the expansion and refurbishing of Andrássy Avenue and the construction of the first metro line in Budapest” (Wiki)
Centennial Hall The opening of the hall was part of the celebration commemorating the 100th anniversary of the battle (of Leipzig) following the proclamation in Breslau by King Frederick of Prussia of the uprising against Napoleon’s occupation.
Novgorod The Millennium of Russia in Novgorod was erected in 1862 to celebrate the millennium of Rurik's arrival to Novgorod, an event traditionally taken as a starting point of the history of Russian statehood.
Paris, Banks of the Seine “The design of the Eiffel Tower….. was envisioned after discussion about a suitable centrepiece for the proposed 1889 Exposition Universelle, a world's fair to celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution.” (Wiki)
Royal Exhibition Building . Originally completed in 1880, in preparation for the Melbourne International Exhibition, it was altered/redecorated for the “Melbourne Centennial Exhibition" in 1888, celebrating a century of European settlement in Australia.
Statue of Liberty “A gift from the French people to the American people for the 100th anniversary of American Independence in 1876, the colossal Statue of Liberty” (Musee d’Orsay). Or, more generally, of 100 years of Franco-US friendship following that event. In fact it wasn’t inaugurated until Oct 1886 but the arm holding the torch was sent to Philadelphia for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition
Water Management System of Augsburg The three monumental fountain systems of the Augustus, the Mercury and the Hercules fountains, are located in the area of the present day Maximilianstraße. They were built between 1594 and 1602 on the occasion of the 1600th anniversary celebrations of the city and were meant to be expressions of the abundance of water in the city. (nom file)
