Chettinad

Chettinad, Village Clusters of the Tamil Merchants is part of the Tentative list of India in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

The Chettinad are 11 villages of Tamil Merchants, the Natukottai Chettiars. They were built between the the 1850’s and 1940’s. Their houses show a particular architecture, with many decorations and extensions turning them into palatial constructions. The land use shows traditional Tamil techniques of water management.
