The An-Nakhl fortress, a stage on the pilgrimage route to Mecca is part of the Tentative list of Egypt in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

The 16th century An-Nakhl fortress in the Sinai was a stage on the pilgrimage route to Mecca. It is a square building with a central courtyard. A canal brought water to its three underground reservoirs. It was in use for pilgrims til around 1900. Afterwards it was captured and damaged in World War I and the wars with Israel in 1956 and 1967.
