Parc national de Zakouma
Parc national de Zakouma is part of the Tentative list of Chad in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
Zakouma National Park is one of the last wildlife sanctuaries in Sahelian Africa, which still shelters decent numbers of large mammals. Zakouma is part of the Sudano-Sahelian vegetation zone, and has shrubland, high grasses, and Acacia forests. A variety of large mammals have been recorded in Zakouma, such as buffalo, elephant, Kordofan giraffe, hartebeest, leopard, and lion. The parks suffered heavily from (mainly elephant) poaching in the 2000’s. The situation has improved significantly since, the elephant numbers are rising again and rhinos have been reintroduced.
