Wasit

.

Wasit is part of the Tentative list of Iraq in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

Wasit comprises the remains of an ancient city along the Tigris. It was built around the year 700 as a military encampment. It eventually became a center of shipbuilding and trade. Only with the shift in the course of the Tigris, sometime in the 15th century, did the city decline and eventually disappear.
