The Cultural Triangle is part of the Tentative list of Guatemala in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

The Cultural Triangle contains Mayan cities like Yaxhá, Nakum, Naranjo and Holmul plus smaller centers, all in the oriental part of Petén. They are characterized by enormous squares surrounded by high pyramidal buildings. The archaeological sites are part of a multidisciplinary project of excavation that started in 1994. This area was the most populated of the Mayan Classic period.
