Le paysage culturel de Diy Gid Biy des Monts Mandara

.

Le paysage culturel de Diy Gid Biy des Monts Mandara is part of the Tentative list of Cameroon in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List. It is a proposed extension of Sukur WHS.

The cultural landscape of Diy Gid Biy is a proposed extension to the Nigerian WHS of the cultural landscape of Sukur. The landscape is composed of ruins of 16 dry stone structures (walls, platforms) along the Mandara Mountains, dating from the 12th to 15th centuries. They were not constructed by the contemporary inhabitants of the region, the Mafa, but by people whom the Mafa consider to be their ancestors. The structures have probably fulfilled different functions (ceremonial, residential, agricultural) in the communities of the builders and are of historical, archaeological and cultural importance. They have certain architectural features in common with the Sukur WHS, but their variety of functions adds a new element. Nowadays, the structures form an exceptional landscape in combination with the terraced agriculture and the living traditions of the Mafa people.
