The Vernacular Stilt Housing of Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta and of Medio Atrato are traditional settlements around lakes and rivers. People sustain themselves with fishing and agriculture. This type of housing dates from the 19th century. The stilt houses of Medio Atrato are lived in by descendants of African slaves.
