Since 1997, I have traveled extensively, focusing on World Heritage Sites, while working in ICT management. I quit my job in 2022, and since then, have been dedicating all my time to World Heritage Travel and running this website.

Plans for 2025

  • Big Trip to #1,000 (November/December), including the UAE, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia.

K'gari

There doesn’t seem to be much variety in how to do K’gari, the only choice to make is whether to stay overnight or not. As a second day would bring …

Daintree

All reviewers of the Wet Tropics of Queensland so far have covered Barron Gorge National Park, which is an easy train ride from Cairns. The other 40 or so parks …

Green turtle at Great Barrier Reef

Great Barrier Reef (Inscribed)

Great Barrier Reef with dry feet

The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) poses the same issue for a “non-waterperson” like me as several other marine sites: how to create a satisfying visit that touches upon the site’s …

Faya Palaeolandscape (Inscribed)

Faya unraveled

I visited Faya in November 2025 on the UAE road trip with Philipp and Jay, and I am the first to report back on it since its inscription this summer. …

I was close to Bosra 5 months ago, when I visited Umm Al-Jimal. That Jordanian WHS lies just some 25km away and is said to have been within the …

Maaloula Feast of the Cross

Maaloula (On tentative list)

Maaloula - Feast of the Cross

One of the charms of Northern Iraq, Northern Syria and Lebanon is the existence of remote Christian sites. Sometimes these are relict landscapes, but there are also thriving religious communities. …

Arwad is a small island that was settled in the early 2nd millennium BC by the Phoenicians. The still inhabited island lies across the sea from the Syrian port of …

Ugarit overview

Ugrarit (On tentative list)

Ugarit

The Tentative Site of Ugarit (or Ugrarit) lies just outside the Syrian coastal city of Latakia. The archeological site is fenced, staffed, has some information panels in Arabic, English and …

Apamea

Apamee (On tentative list)

Apamea

Let's start this sobering review with a Fun Fact: Apamea was named after Apamee, the first wife of Seleucid ruler Seleucus I Nicator (c. 358 BC – 281 BC). His …

The Ancient Villages of Northern Syria have been inaccessible during Syria’s Civil War due to their proximity to the front line between the Syrian Army and the “rebel” capital of …

Aleppo Clock Tower

Aleppo (Inscribed)

Along with Palmyra, Aleppo presents the saddest story among Syria’s WHS. Tours in the past would allocate two days to it, spending the night in one of the traditional Syrian …

Saladin Castle

Castles of Syria

When I started preparing for a visit to this WHS, I was wondering why this site is not limited to the famous Crac des Chevaliers only, but also includes Saladin …

Palmyra ruins

Palmyra (Inscribed)

Palmyra

Palmyra is pretty far ‘out there’: on the 3-hour drive from Damascus, the only thing we saw was desert. It still needs a special permit to access (I visited in …

Hidden treasures of Damascus

Somehow Damascus felt very familiar: it is the quintessential Old Town of the Middle East, with narrow alleyways and busy souks selling everything, from spices to lingerie. Numerous comparisons came …

The White Elephant of Tripoli

A visit to Tripoli’s Rachid Karami International Fair Grounds not only brought me one ‘tick’ closer to 1,000, but it also corrected a very annoying near miss that I had …

Nahr el-Kalb

The commemorative stelae of Nahr el-Kalb have always fascinated me, although this quirky site probably already has earned enough international recognition by its inscription in the Memory of the World …

Wooded Meadows Tõramaa

Wooded meadows (On tentative list)

Wooded Meadows

Estonia’s Tentative List isn’t exactly a cause for excitement, and an entry just called “Wooded meadows” sounds even less appealing than “Baltic Klint”. Still, these wooded meadows are a typical …
