1977 in Paris, France
Session 1 of the World Heritage Committee (WHC)
The World Heritage Convention was adopted on November 16, 1972, by the General Conference of UNESCO. The World Heritage Committee (WHC) session of 1977 was the first general meeting to discuss how to move things forward. No sites were listed at that session.
The impetus for the convention can be traced back to the post-war era, but it was the monumental international campaign in the 1960s to save the Abu Simbel temples from the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam in Egypt that provided a powerful catalyst.
