The Salt Range is a low mountain range in Punjab province that stretches for about 200 kilometres between the Indus River in the west and the Jhelam River in the southeast. The Salt Range was originated 800 million years. The area is rich in palaeontological finds and has a high density of historical sites dating back to Alexander the Great. The Khewra mine is the oldest salt mine in Pakistan. Salt mining and trading began in the 16th century during the Mughal era.
