Punkevni Caves
Located in the Czech Republic, the Moravian Karst features an extraordinary network of limestone formations, most notably the Punkevní Caves and the Kateřinská Cave. The Punkevní Caves are famous for being part of a complex river system that flows through the massive Macocha Abyss, a 138-meter-deep gorge.
This area is unique for its "light hole" abyss, which creates a special microclimate that allows rare, cold-loving plants to thrive at its base. Nearby, Kateřinská Cave houses the "Main Dome," which stands as the largest underground space open to the public in the country. Visitors to this cave can see the "Bamboo Forest," a stunning collection of tall, slender stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. The region also serves as a vital sanctuary for wildlife, acting as a winter home for 14 different species of bats and preserving rare fossils of ancient cave bears.
