Nablus, also known as the biblical Shechem and the Roman Flavia Neapolis, is a city in the northern West Bank at the slope of the Mount Gerizim. The old town was built on the Roman street grid and remains of Roman buildings, such as the amphitheatre, have been excavated. Tell Balata, two kilometres east of the Roman city, has been identified as the biblical Shechem, the oldest remains of settlements date back to the 4th century BCE.
