The Hippo Pond of Bala is a vast freshwater lake that sees high numbers of migratory birds and is home to some 100 hippopotamuses. The surrounding landscape is made up of Sudano-Guinea savanna. Bala Lake is already protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a RAMSAR wetland.
