The Ilmensky mountains

.

The Ilmensky mountains is part of the Tentative list of Russia in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

The Ilmensky mountains are known for the mineral variety of their rocks. Precious (like topaz and beryl) and semi-precious stones, such as amazonite and rare metals, are found here. In 1920 Ilmen Nature Reserve was founded as Russia’s first mineralogical nature reserve. There have been over 400 mines in the area over the years, but mining is now forbidden.
