Fort Zeelandia

.

Fort Zeelandia is part of the Tentative list of Guyana in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

Fort Zeelandia and the Court of Policy Building were constructed during the Dutch possession of the region. Fort Zeelandia is a small brick fort that guarded the mouth of the Essequibo River. The Court of Policy housed the legislative body, but also had a church and a room for auctioning slaves. Both structures date from around 1743 and reputedly are the oldest surviving buildings in Guyana.
