Historic Georgetown, renamed Janjanbureh in 1995, is a planned port town on an island in the Gambia River in eastern Gambia. The town was founded by the British in 1835 to establish the settlement of Fort George for freed slaves. It is the furthest inland settlement of the British colonialists in Gambia. A few buildings from this period have been preserved: the Regional Governor's House, the Methodist Church from 1835 and the last intact Creole-style wooden house in the town.
