Isernia-La Pineta and Notarchirico
The Lower Palaeolithic Palaeosurfaces at Isernia-La Pineta and Notarchirico are two sites with excavations that have brought to light major palaeosurfaces that relate to the early and widespread settlements of the Italian peninsula during the lower Paleolithic period. Each site contains multiple archaeological layers with lithic manufacts including choppers and flake tools, as well as animal remains. A fragment of a human femur was also found at Notarchirico, the oldest human fossil remain found so far in southern Italy.
