Senegal ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 13 February 1976. Its current World Heritage inscriptions feature a mix of cultural and natural sites.
Cultural themes include Atlantic slave-trade history at Gorée Island, colonial-era urban centers like Saint-Louis, ancient funerary landscapes evidenced by the Senegambian stone circles, and traditional shell-mound communities in the Saloum Delta. Natural listings focus on vital wetland and savanna ecosystems, such as Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary and Niokolo-Koba National Park.
