Pakistan ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 23 July 1976. Its inscribed sites are exclusively cultural, encompassing ancient urban centres, Buddhist monastic complexes, Mughal landscaping, and military architecture.
Common themes include the archaeological legacy of the Indus Valley and Gandhara civilizations, Mughal-era forts and gardens, and sacred funerary landscapes. Recent tentative nominations also recognize diverse cultural landscapes such as desert forts, water-engineering systems, and Jain and Hindu heritage.
