The Netherlands ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention in 1992 and has since focused primarily on nominating cultural heritage sites.

Its World Heritage Sites reflect themes such as water management, urban planning, and innovative engineering, which are central to the country’s historical and geographical development. Examples include historic canals, polder landscapes, and defense systems. While the emphasis is on cultural heritage, the Netherlands also includes a transboundary natural site via the Wadden Sea.
