Montenegro ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 3 June 2006, inheriting its status from the former Yugoslavia.

Among its inscribed sites are both cultural properties—such as the Natural and Culturo‑Historical Region of Kotor, medieval stećci tombstone graveyards, and Venetian defensive works—and a natural site, Durmitor National Park. Common themes across its nominations highlight medieval and Venetian-era architecture, traditional funerary landscapes, karst-dominated geology, alpine biodiversity, and the integration of cultural settlements within dramatic natural backdrops
