The Archaeological Museum was partly built on the remains of the walls of a 13th-century Cistercian monastery. The so-called Oratory of the Phalaris dates from the 2nd century BC and is the only cult building in Agrigentum that was newly erected during Roman times. In the Middle Ages it was integrated into the Cistercian monastery as an oratory.
