Marburg is a very nice old town an hour north of Frankfurt. The Elisabeth Church is a large Gothic church, one of several Marburg has. Unlike the rest, it is located outside the old town and was built outside the city walls. The Elisabeth Church was a major pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages and one of the most important churches north of the Alps. It is indeed huge and has an impressive facade and some nice stained glass windows. However, it is clear why being a large, impressive Gothic church was not enough to grant it a WHS status. Marburg didn't retreat from its WHS pursuit and it is now promoting its university for the next German T-list.
I spent a summer in Marburg in 2004, and went back in 2006 with my husband. The church of St Elizabeth is my favorite church. I have been around to London, and other places in England and Germany, and Rome; but this one holds a special spot for me. It is cozy and beautiful, with a market in the parking lot twice a week. There are artifacts all around the city dedicated to St Elizabeth and even her daughter too, watch for them hidden in plain view.
