Started in 1541, and rebuilt after a 1676 convent, the Church and Convent of Saint Augustine was the seat of the order in New Spain. There was also an institutional institution, the "Colegio del Santísimo Nombre de Jesús", which formed many later University professors. As with other monastic orders, after the "Ley de Desamortización" of 1861, all religious property was confiscated and divided.
