Wojciech Fedoruk Profile

Travelling is my biggest passion. I try to spend every day of my vacation time (unfortunately, limited to 26 days a year) travelling. I travel mostly with my family and sometimes solo. I love going to remote places and always plan visiting as many WH sites as possible. Although sometimes they are not rewarding, in most cases visiting WHS gives me much better understanding of the region I visit.

I find this site very helpful in planning my trips to more difficult WHS and want to share my reviews especially on rarely visited ones.

Saviour Transfiguration Church and St. Sophia Cathedral in the town of Polatsk (T)

Wojciech Fedoruk Poland - 10-Jul-19

Saviour Transfiguration Church and St. Sophia Cathedral in the town of Polatsk (T)

This is a very strange nomination. Belarus proposed two churches that now have nothing in common except being in the same town of Polatsk. The first one – Saviour Transfiguration Church – is one of the oldest and most important churches in Belarus. Now it is part of the complex of the Monastery of Transfiguration and St. Euphrosine, a bit far from the center. Judging from the outside, the church is the least prominent building of the monastery (it is also the most distant from the entrance). Its real value is inside, as the whole interior is covered with original beautiful frescoes. During my visit (June 2019) the church was closed for renovation but you could look inside. The best frescoes were also presented on billboards around the church

Churches of the Pskov School of Architecture

Churches of the Pskov School of Architecture

I visited Pskov at the end of my trip to Russia in 2016. I did not expect anything special in Pskov, although wanted to visit this city, with links to the history of Poland and famous city walls. And indeed, massive city walls were the first thing that was outstanding in Pskov. The second one was its kremlin (here called Krom) which was very small comparing to Russian standards (where usually kremlins are quite broad) but one of the niciest. But honestly I had mixed feelings with the historical center – although overall it was fine, it lacked integrity and historical buildings were mixed with much newer ones. It did not help that the weather was rainy that day and at the end I got all wet.

Íznik (T)

Íznik (T)

Iznik now is a small and insignificant town not very far from Istanbul but centuries ago it was an important center of Byzantine empire and then, for a a short period, the capital of Ottoman empire. First soup kitchen in the world was founded in Iznik. Later Iznik became famous of its ceramic industry. For Western culture Iznik is much better known under its latin name Nicaea. It was this place that hosted the Counsils of Nicaea and creed that was adopted after The First Council of Nicaea is until now named the Nicene Creed and is used in Christian liturgy all over the world.

Mount Harşena and the Rock-tombs of the Pontic Kings (T)

Mount Harşena and the Rock-tombs of the Pontic Kings (T)

Amasya was on our way from Ani to Istanbul and, considering it required only a short detour from main E80 road, I decided to go there. It was Saturday afternoon and the town was bustling with tourists. There is no doubt the town is worth its popularity – it was undisputedly one of the most beautiful places in Turkey we visited. The town, like many Turkish settlements, is located on the slope of Mount Harşena, along the river of Yeşilırmak and its city center is well preserved. The buildings just on the river bank are really picturesque. To fully admire the beauty of the town one has to climb up the mount Harşena. As a WHS fan I had to do it anyway because the mountain is on Turkish Tentative List. The uniqueness of Harşena stems from stone tombs carved in its slopes

Anatolian Seljuks Madrasahs (T)

Out of all proposed properties we visited only one – Yakutiye Madrasah in Erzurum. I did not read a description on UNESCO site so I did not realize there was another one in Eurzurum - Çifte Minareli Madrasah, very close to Yakutiye.

Yakutiye Madrasah is located in the very center of Erzurum, one of the biggest cities in the East of Turkey
