Wojciech Fedoruk Profile

Travelling is my biggest passion. I try to spend every day of my vacation time (unfortunately, limited to 26 days a year) travelling. I travel mostly with my family and sometimes solo. I love going to remote places and always plan visiting as many WH sites as possible. Although sometimes they are not rewarding, in most cases visiting WHS gives me much better understanding of the region I visit.

I find this site very helpful in planning my trips to more difficult WHS and want to share my reviews especially on rarely visited ones.

Great City of Chicomostoc-La Quemada (T)

Great City of Chicomostoc-La Quemada (T)

After visiting Zacatecas I had to choose the road to Guadalajara. It was possible to drive quickly and conveniently on the motorway or a bit slower and certainly less comfortably via an alternative route through the mountains. The alternative route had the advantage - it led through the ruins of La Quemada, T-List site with encouraging photos on the Internet. We chose an alternative route and after an hour of driving, we appeared at the entrance of La Quemada.

It was a hit. At first glance, La Quemada is a ruin of many but with picturesque location on the mountainside, with a beautiful view of the surrounding area

Palais du Zarmakoye de Dosso (T)

Wojciech Fedoruk Poland - 08-Apr-19

Palais du Zarmakoye de Dosso (T)

The palace is located in the center of Dosso, near the main road Zinder-Niamey, which is also the most important road for the whole country. It is quite easy to find although the photos available in the Internet may be misleading – they show different palace in Maradi, not the one in Dosso. Sultan’s palaces may be found in almost all bigger cities in Niger, but the one in Dosso stands out a bit and, out of around five I saw during my trip, is the one I liked the most. It is very nicely painted, though its architecture from the outside is typical. We tried to enter but could reach only the first room – which had something like a wooden dome

La foret classée, le lac de Madarounfa et les tombeaux des 99 saints (T)

La foret classée, le lac de Madarounfa et les tombeaux des 99 saints (T)

This site lays near the border with Nigeria, about 20 km from main Nigerien road connecting Zinder and Niamey. It contains three elements: Lake Madarounfa with neighbouring 'classical forest' as well as the tombs of 99 saints. During our short stay we could not locate the tombs, but we crossed the forest (in fact, not very dense and not spectacular at all) and spent a while on the shore of the lake. The lake itself is not spectacular but we loved the experience a lot – this is because after 15 minutes since we arrived there was whole village came to see a group of white strangers. There was a lot of talk, smiles and photos. Obviously I cannot fully assess the OUV of this place as we did not see the main component of “tombs of the saints”

Agadez

Wojciech Fedoruk Poland - 31-Mar-19

Agadez

There are not many big cities in Sahara, so Agadez was always outstanding - it is located on the crossroads of trade routes North-South and East-West of the desert. Agadez was (and still is) treated by Tuaregs as their capital. Its tourist attractivity increased in the 1980s, with the increase of popularity of the Paris-Dakar Rally. Even at the beginning of the 21st century, every self-respecting globetrotter exploring West Africa stopped at Agadez, visiting nearby Tenere National Park and the Air Mountains. Air France maintained regular scheduled flights from French cities, and hotels and tourism experienced real desert in the city. Then, however, much worse times came to the region.

The Cultural-Natural Landscape of Ramsar (T)

Wojciech Fedoruk Poland - 29-Mar-19

The Cultural-Natural Landscape of Ramsar (T)

Ramsar is not a typical place on World Heritage journey through Iran. For us it was almost exactly half way from Masouleh to Gonbad-e Qabus so we decided to stay there overnight. Ramsar is known from two things – first is Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, signed in 1971 (many World Heritage Sites all over the world are protected areas under this convention). Second is the fact that Ramsar has the highest natural radiation in the (inhabited) world – there are scientific investigations about its influence on people's health, but the results for now are pending.
