Watkinstravel Profile

Air traffic controller from Canada. Spent the better part of my 20's traveling around the world after finishing my bachelor degree. Made a friend on the road that suggested I look into the WH list if I didnt know what to visit somewhere. Excellent advice! Unfortunately got into the WHS thing a little too late to maximize my potential visits. I wont make that mistake again! Now my goal is to visit every country and as many WHS as i reasonably can and I'm rarely disappointed.

My travel experience is varied but has mostly ranged in the budget to extreme budget category which has made things very interesting at times. With a limited time and budget and to balance other interests I am more prone to skipping out on the less known natural WHS.

I still try to take holidays and visit new sites a few times a year, with an itinerary and prioritization that befuddles all, including the mrs.

Fun trivia: I proposed to my wife in the Rock Islands WHS in Palau. I married her in the Waterton/Glacier NP WHS in Canada :)

Palenque

Watkinstravel Canada - 29-Aug-19

Palenque

Maybe it was the perfect weather or the howler monkeys or the thousands of butterflies, but Palenque ended up unexpectedly being our favourite Mayan site on this trip and second overall (after Tikal). It has probably found the best balance between restoration and jungle setting, protection and letting you climb/explore, while being large enough to explore for hours without having to get lost or walk long distances through areas of no interest, Touristy but not too crowded also. Unfortunately we visited on a Monday and the museum was closed.

Antigua Guatemala

Antigua Guatemala

Compared to other colonial towns in Central America (and quite possibly the whole new world) Antigua has no equal. We arrived at night and the first impression was of how wide the streets are. Totally unlike other old towns which usually feel so cramped. It is beautifully preserved and maintained and the historic area is much larger than I expected. Make no mistake, this is a well-oiled tourism machine used to lots of visitors passing through. But rather than going the overly tacky route, they cater to foreigners with nice hotels, pretty cafes, good food and clean streets

Copan

Copan

Honduras has a reputation that is enough to scare off most visitors from making a lengthy visit. Fortunately Copan Ruinas is very close to the Guatemalan border and is easily reached from there both independently or by tour/tourist shuttle. There are several sections to this site including the museum and tunnels and with all the separate fees it is one of the more expensive Mayan WHS to see.

We covered the most central parts and didn't make it out to the Sepulturas section and it still took us a couple hours. Compared to other Mayan ruins what really sets this one apart is the quality and quantity of stele and carved detail, especially in the hieroglyphic staircase

Chalchuapa (T)

Chalchuapa (T)

We visited part of this TWHS in the afternoon after visiting Joya de Ceren before returning back to Santa Ana. There are 3 separate zones in town of differing historical periods. We only visited El Tazumal. Somehow this area is far more touristic than Joya de Ceren, with souvenir stalls lining the street in front of the entrance to the small park. There is a small ticket office but the window was shut and the security guard let us through without paying. Locals were picnicking on the grass and resting in the shade while we checked out the small museum and then circumnavigated the restored Mayan temple that is the purpose of the place.

Joya de Ceren

Watkinstravel Canada - 24-Aug-19

Joya de Ceren

After some problems and delays in Nicaragua we found ourselves having to scale back our plans through El Salvador. Fortunately there is only one WHS to visit and it remained our priority. The worst thing you could do when visiting this site is expect it to be anything like any of the well known Mayan ruins in the region. This one is small scale and has obvious OUV that is more archaeologically technical than of broad appeal to the casual tourist. There are no major structures here and the village is believed to have only existed for 30 years or so before it was abandoned and buried by ash. Having said that we enjoyed our visit and found it to be a nice compliment to our overall understanding and appreciation for all things Mayan
