Watkinstravel Profile

Air traffic controller from Canada. Spent the better part of my 20's traveling around the world after finishing my bachelor degree. Made a friend on the road that suggested I look into the WH list if I didnt know what to visit somewhere. Excellent advice! Unfortunately got into the WHS thing a little too late to maximize my potential visits. I wont make that mistake again! Now my goal is to visit every country and as many WHS as i reasonably can and I'm rarely disappointed.

My travel experience is varied but has mostly ranged in the budget to extreme budget category which has made things very interesting at times. With a limited time and budget and to balance other interests I am more prone to skipping out on the less known natural WHS.

I still try to take holidays and visit new sites a few times a year, with an itinerary and prioritization that befuddles all, including the mrs.

Fun trivia: I proposed to my wife in the Rock Islands WHS in Palau. I married her in the Waterton/Glacier NP WHS in Canada :)

Cartagena

Watkinstravel Canada - 12-Jul-19

Cartagena

After reading many travel reviews on Cartagena suggesting that less time is better (cost, crowds and hassle were frequently mentioned) we only gave ourselves one full day to see the old town. The highlights can certainly be seen in a busy day but I felt rushed and didn't do all that I'd hoped.

As a strategic Caribbean port for the [...]

Santa Cruz de Mompox

Watkinstravel Canada - 01-Jul-19

Santa Cruz de Mompox

Although Mompox was an important and prosperous port upriver from Cartagena, it was never very large. It hasn't really grown and has a very relaxed and lethargic atmosphere. It's no wonder rocking chairs are popular here. We quickly took over a few of our own at a little cafe and just watched the river flow by.

Arriving in the early morning off an overnight bus, our first impressions of Mompox were not positive. Bus offices are at least a few blocks inland while the historic core runs parallel to the river and is only a few hundred meters long and about 2 blocks wide. Outside of this clean, preserved colonial core, Mompox is mostly a rundown and dirty village as far as we could tell. But the core is beautiful. The original buildings are also run down but in an atmospheric kind of way. There are three small plazas along the waterfront and the churches and old marketplace have been nicely restored. There are also boat tours along the river in the afternoon. Staying in one of the colonial homes rounds out the experience

Cultural Landscape of the Lower Basin of the Chicamocha River (T)

Cultural Landscape of the Lower Basin of the Chicamocha River (T)

Continuing north, it took us half a day to get to San Gil from Villa de Leyva. San Gil, is the most touristic town in the area and makes the most logical base for exploring this TWHS. This cultural landscape seems a bit more unified and organized than the one we'd been to previously with it being based on the transition/fusion from pre-hispanic Guane culture to colonial occupation in this area. Small colonial towns were built over Guane villages around the canyon and later isolation when bypassed by modern roads has led to the preservation of the towns as well as the colonial trail network (built over pre-existing trails) connecting them.

South of Ricaurte Province (T)

South of Ricaurte Province (T)

A pretty broad name but perhaps the only one that makes sense for a TWHS whose only real unifying feature is the location. Reading up on the description it sounds like they just threw in everything they could think of for this one from paleontological sites, pre-hispanic sites including an astronomical observatory, a natural sanctuary and several colonial towns. To me that usually means nothing will stand out as being particularly exceptional by itself so we didn't put a lot of effort into this one and just visited the colonial heritage town of Villa de Leyva.

University City of Bogotá (T)

Watkinstravel Canada - 30-Jun-19

This site is only about a 20 minute walk away from Bogota's other TWHS, the Virgilio Barco library so in less than half an hour we stood at the gates to the university staring at the stadium and not permitted to go any further. Who knew an entire university could be fenced off and closed by security on a holiday? I'd figured that even if there were no classes we could at least walk around the grounds a little to get a feel for the overall layout but no, we were not going to be able to talk our way in. Walking the perimeter of the university outside the fence leaves you quite far from anything of significance and we weren't able to get any real idea of what the nomination is about
