Watkinstravel Profile

Air traffic controller from Canada. Spent the better part of my 20's traveling around the world after finishing my bachelor degree. Made a friend on the road that suggested I look into the WH list if I didnt know what to visit somewhere. Excellent advice! Unfortunately got into the WHS thing a little too late to maximize my potential visits. I wont make that mistake again! Now my goal is to visit every country and as many WHS as i reasonably can and I'm rarely disappointed.

My travel experience is varied but has mostly ranged in the budget to extreme budget category which has made things very interesting at times. With a limited time and budget and to balance other interests I am more prone to skipping out on the less known natural WHS.

I still try to take holidays and visit new sites a few times a year, with an itinerary and prioritization that befuddles all, including the mrs.

Fun trivia: I proposed to my wife in the Rock Islands WHS in Palau. I married her in the Waterton/Glacier NP WHS in Canada :)

Al-Hijr

Watkinstravel Canada - 29-Mar-20

Al-Hijr

We felt lucky to have been able to get in to see this site in Feb 2020. It has been officially closed for quite a while and will continue to remain closed but during the Winter in Tantora festival in Al Ula the site was partially opened for tour visits. This involved registering and paying for a visit either online or in Al Ula where overpriced festival buses would transport you to the main north entrance. The old Al-Hijr railway station (part of its own Hejaz railway TWHS) is restored and being converted into a visitors centre and after a welcome tea and dates, we found ourselves funneled onto a different guided tour bus for a partial trip around the site.

Rock Art in the Hail Region

Watkinstravel Canada - 29-Mar-20

Rock Art in the Hail Region

We also visited the Jubbah section of the rock art in early Feb 2020. It is an easy day trip from Hail and we went on a friday afternoon. Note that the site is only open after ~3pm on fridays but can be visited in the morning also during the rest of the week. Having found the place more easily than we thought, we arrived a little after 2pm and sat in the deserted parking lot unsure if it would really open for only a couple hours. Sure enough it did but in the worst case scenario it is possible to see a few of the petroglyphs through the fence in all else fails.

Asmara

Watkinstravel Canada - 29-Mar-20

Asmara

I must admit that I didn't go all the way to Eritrea in Feb 2020 to specifically visit this WHS though it would be impossible to miss once you are there since it encompasses pretty much the whole capital. It was my third trip to the region but first successful attempt at getting into the country so it had been a bit of a nagging personal goal for a while. I'm not familiar with the other major Art Deco hot spots so wasn't sure how appealing it would be to me personally but I quickly came to love the overall atmosphere of Asmara and very much enjoyed my time there. I'm not sure if it says more about me or the country but it is easily my favourite African capital.

Zabid

Watkinstravel Canada - 27-Nov-19

Zabid

I managed to get to Zabid in March 2007, just before UNESCO gave it a "last chance" to fix itself up. It was in a terrible state of decay but not totally forgotten. There was already a small team of foreign conservationists computer-mapping the entire town to help come up with the best approach to right the ship so to speak. I spent a few hours chatting with them and got my first lesson in conservation and an inkling of understanding that while it might be World Heritage to us, it is just home to the locals and they might be more interested in making a living or just surviving than self-sacrificing to preserve ancient history. There must be some sort of moral/ethical dilemma here.

The Historic City of Thula (T)

Watkinstravel Canada - 27-Nov-19

The Historic City of Thula (T)

Unintentional visit Feb 2007. I hadn't set out to specifically visit Thula but while at the rock palace of Wadi Dhahr I was offered a ride with an American woman who had hired a car and driver for the day. We were taken to Shibam (not the more famous one in the east), Kawkaban (worth a visit if in the area, it is built on top of a cliff with great views) and Thula. Thula was our last stop, it had started raining and the driver anxious to get back so we didn't have much time to explore. Unlike villages in many other regions of Yemen, homes in Thula were made of stone instead of mud and overall were in a much better state of preservation than elsewhere. Great stylistic elements especially on the windows as seen in the photo.
