Thomas Buechler Profile

I started travelling in Europe with the popular Interrail ticket that was valid for most of the Western European countries.
That was more than 30 years ago.And what looked like a normal student experience, turned out to be just the beginning of an incredible lifespan tasting of different countries, cultures, people and cuisines. But it all started with Europe.
1980 I moved my "headquarters" to the Philippines, and started to visit all of Southeast Asia, and its marvelous temples and cultural sites, also in China and the Indian Subcontinent.
Later on ,I visited all countries in Oceania,South America, Central America and the
Carribean. On the African continent I have been to all 53 UN countries, and to many UNESCO world heritage sites that are very difficult to reach, and really off the beaten track. In 56 countries I have now visited all Unesco sites that currently exist, but then in 27 countries I have not seen any yet!! As of September 2018, I have been to 738 sites out of 1092,or around 68%, in a total of 142  countries! I keep on going, including the Tentative list that I have a bit neglected in the past!

Lord Howe Island

Thomas Buechler Switzerland - 29-Jan-19

Lord Howe Island

Home to just under 500 permanent residents, Lord Howe is also restricted to just 400 tourist beds, and Quantas has exclusive rights from mainland Australia which makes both airfares and accomodation extremely expensive. Very rarely I have to ask help from the local tourism office, but on Lord Howe this was the case, as I was unable to book a bed, after purchasing the airticket from Sydney. They found Hideaway Guesthouse at 250 AUD a night, just a short walk uphill from that very same tourism office which also houses the island’s museum, and the best internet connection to the outside world

Ahwar of Southern Iraq

Thomas Buechler Switzerland - 06-Dec-18

Ahwar of Southern Iraq

Ur was once an important Sumerian city state near the mouth of the Euphrates river, at the coast with marshy surroundings and regular floods and adverse weather impacts like erosions.Ur was already occupied as early as 6500 BC during the Urbaid period, but had its peak during the Sumerian period about 3000 BC. Buildings were made out of mudbricks and mud plaster. The main temple, Ziggurat of Ur, was built during king Ur-Nammu reign about 2040 BC. His codes of law (Hammurabi) is the oldest existing deciphered law writing in the world, the original at the Louvre museum, but replicas in many places including the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad. On the basalt stele are 282 laws including the famous “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” rules

Okinoshima Island

Okinoshima Island

This just deals with the technical side of visiting Hetsu-myia (Munakata Taisha) by public transport from Fukuoka, and combining this visit with the other Unesco site in the region, the Yawata Imperial Steel works in Kitakyushu which is one of the sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.

Go to Fukuoka Tenjin station that is very centrally located. Look for bus stop 19, close to the big post office building

M'Zab Valley

Thomas Buechler Switzerland - 12-May-16

On a Friday there are no official guides at the entrance gate of the old city of Ghardaia, nevertheless it is compulsory, and I have to ask the help of the military and police officials. But luckily some diplomats from Algiers showed up, and I was able to join them, not only for Ghardaia, but also the sister village of Beni Isguen; we walk up to the local mosque, always the highest point of a Mozabite town. The paths are very narrow, good for donkeys, but nothing else. In summer time when the temperatures rise to above 50 degrees, the locals relocate to the palm oasis below. We also visit the cemetery where ‘another one bites the dust’ does not have to be further explained, there are no graves, no flowers, just stones and sand from the Sahara

Djémila

Thomas Buechler Switzerland - 04-May-16

Djémila

Setif is a good headquarter from where to explore the Roman ruins of Djemila, the antique

Roman settlement of Cuicul. Select a trustworthy driver and start, half a day is enough for the 35km distance. For the very first time I had to register with the local police at the entrance gate, I found it a little exagerated, but locals always say that it's for security reasons. Djemila in spring time is unbelievable beautiful. It is the symbiosis of the flowers with the ruins that was so unique. I was told that April/May is the best season to come here. But I can also feel the Sahara dust in the air. Besides of the Basilica, the Arc and various Temples, there are Baths and a very interesting museum with famous mosaic tiles like the Toilet of Venus. Its by far the best museum I have seen in Algeria
