Randi Thomsen Profile

Together with Svein, we travel around the world to explore and enjoy new WHS, countries, culture and great food.  In 2010 we become WHS travellers, when we started planning our trips in order to visit WHS.

Hunting for WHS makes us go off the beaten tracks and brings us to new and exciting places, trying to understand the OUV.  Travel is more than seeing new places, it’s  about learning history, new culture and enjoy excotic food and drinks.

Makgadikgadi Pans Landscape (T)

Randi Thomsen Norway - 13-Feb-21

Makgadikgadi Pans Landscape (T)

The proposed Makgadikgadi Pans Landscape consist of three different locations the Makgadikgadi National Parks, Nxai Pan National Park and Nata Bird Sanctuary.

We managed to visit all three of them on our Namibia-Botswana roadtrip in April 2019.

From Kasane to Maun we did a stop-over close to Gweta. We stayed at Planet Baobab

The Holy place of worship of Ukonsaari by the Sami people at Inari (T)

The Holy place of worship of Ukonsaari by the Sami people at Inari (T)

As part of our 2020 summer trip to the north of Norway, we did a short cut through northern Finland. We stayed overnight at the shore of Lake Inari.

In order to visit the Island of Ukonsaari, you will have to join a boat-trip. During summer there are daily tours leaving at 13:00 by Visit Inari. So what to do while waiting for the boat to leave? Two options: you can visit the Sami museum, Siida, or take a hike to Pielpajärvi Wilderness Church. The wooden church was built in 1760 after the Christianization of the local people on the site of an old Sami winter village. The easiest way to reach the church is to hike from Inari village,  starting point of the trail is the Sarviniementie parking area. The hike is 5km one way through the woods.

Vat Phou

Visit Januar 2020

Yet another Angkor Site, but has it’s own charm. Nice setting in the slopes of the holy mountain.

From the ticket office, there is an electric bus to the site. We got there in the morning, not many tourists and not too hot. The middle section was nice to explore. The main temple requires a few stairs to climb. The main temple has some very nice reliefs. We also went looking for the elephant stone, crocodile stone and the holy spring.

The small museum is also worth a visit though not outstanding.

Preah Vihear Temple

Randi Thomsen Norway - 07-Nov-20

Preah Vihear Temple

We organized a day trip from Siem Reap with a private car and a driver, a three hour drive. The temple site sits on the top of a 700 m high “mountain”.  The ticket booth is down on the plain and you need to buy special transport to get up the steep hill. It’s $5 pp on a motorbike or $25 for a truck with 6 seats. Entrance is $10pp.

On site there are several bunkers from the dispute between Cambodia and Thailand. Prior to the inscription you could walk up the ancient holy path from the Thai side, but now that entrance is closed.

Torfajökull Volcanic System / Fjallabak Nature Reserve (T)

Torfajökull Volcanic System / Fjallabak Nature Reserve (T)

Visit august 2020

On the last day of our 10 day roadtrip on Iceland, we decided to visit this nature reserve, even though the weather forecast wasn’t too good. From Selfoss it’s a two hour drive to Landmannalaugur. The last stretch(30 km) is F208 (a gravel road) from the north. This is the easiest road for small 4x4 cars with no river crossings. If you have a car with small wheels you leave it at the parking lot about 0,5 km from Landmannalaugur as the last river crossing might be too tough. Lonely planet describes the area as mind-blowing with multicoloured, mountains, southing hot springs, rambling lava flows and clear blue lakes as one of Iceland’s most unique destinations and we agree
