Reichenau

Frederik Dawson Netherlands - 15-Aug-19

Reichenau

Despite my friend’s week long architectural tour was mainly focus on Southern Bavaria, certain addition, as demanded by a fussy World Heritage enthusiast, were located in Baden Württemberg, the three UNESCO listed churches on Reichenau Island. To reach the island we crossed Lake Constance twice, a ferry from Meerburg to Konstanz and another bridge to Reichenau. The island was lovely with many vegetable gardens and very well maintained bicycle lanes, Reichenau is well known destination for cyclists.

Pilgrimage Church of Wies

Pilgrimage Church of Wies

During our architectural tour in Southern Bavaria, my friends and I had seen many abbeys, chapels and churches, “too many” according to my friends’ mourned, and this World Heritage Site was the 8th church in just three days of this trip! Honestly I was not a trip planner, but proposedly insisted to include Wieskirche on this already full with Baroque and Rococo buildings. Such kind of trip may result in a better understanding on its outstanding value of this UNESCO listed place or a terribly and negatively bored to see similar architectural style. Fortunately, despite seeing many similar style, Wieskirche is really special and able to distinguish itself as a real gem of Bavarian churches.

Hal Saflieni Hypogeum

Hal Saflieni Hypogeum

When I planned to visit Malta, Hypogeum was the most interesting site I really wanted to see. I did a reservation online even though the meaning of Hypogeum for me was still unclear at that time. I took a bus from Valletta to see the Hypogeum, the traffic was quite bad and I arrived only 10 minutes before my scheduled tour started. After registered my arrival with receptionists and waited with other 9 people, most were English retirees! The guide hassled us to the exhibition room with modern video presentation, I felt it was a bit too similar with a show in planetarium with pretty bad sound effect and too sci-fi and mysterious themes, moreover it did not give much explanation of Hypogeum which I believed should be a main point what the exhibition should present.

Okinoshima Island

Okinoshima Island

After I visited the World Heritage Site of Okinoshima, to be exact I only visited the mainland part of Munakata Grand Shrine, the Hetsumiya, I really confused what should I be focused on this Japanese site. The original ICOMOS’s recommendation only suggested that only Okinoshima Island should be on the UNESCO list for its outstanding value of archaeology, but when the inscription expanded to include two more shrines, one on the mainland and one on Oshima Island, the raison d'etre of this site for me became obscuring.

Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries

Frederik Dawson Netherlands - 05-Jan-19

Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries

I was a bit skeptical for this site before I visited since I already have been to Haeinsa and Bulguksa temples, so I was curious on the outstanding universal value on “Sansa”, which derived from Chinese word “Shan-si” or the mountain temple. From all inscribed components, I only visited two temples, Beopjusa and Seonamsa. These two temples were located in protected forests, the pathways from car parking areas were scenic with beautiful steams, light forests, pavilions, very nice surrounding but these kind of environment and setting are similar to Haeinsa, so while I was really enjoyed, I could not find uniqueness of the mountain temples that similar to many mountain or forest Buddhist temples in other part of Asia or other religious monasteries around the world.
