Frédéric M Profile

Biologist, entomologist, outdoor enthusiast, scuba-diver, birder and traveler from Québec interested in discovering the world and its wonders! I did my first oversea backpacking trip in 2018 following my master and I don't want to stop any time soon. I am mostly interested in ecology, national parks and thus natural WHS, but being a WHS hunter opens my mind to architecture, history of art, urban planning, industrial heritage and the epic history of the World!

Cathedral of St. James in Sibenik

Cathedral of St. James in Sibenik

I spent three days in Šibenik in June 2018, in between my jaunts to Zadar in Split. I took the opportunity to wander through the winding streets of the town, to swim in the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea and to admire the waterfalls of Krka National Park. I really enjoyed this city with the Mediterranean charm of Split or Dubrovnik, but with less tourists and more authenticity. In addition to the attractions mentioned above, the town is home to a second WHS, the Tvrđava sv. Nikole, which is part of the Venetian works of defence.

Nasca Lines

In mid-March 2020, a few days before the world imploded, we spent two days in Nazca. This town was squeezed between Ica and Cusco (long night bus) in my Peruvian itinerary. We spent the first day shopping for airlines and then visited the Acueductos de Cantalloc (probably a T site). We finally chose to fly with Air Brag. Our research in the city led us to believe that all the companies offered pretty much the same circuit and service at the same price. All passengers now seem to enjoy a window (no more rows of three seats). Regulation also seemed to have been tightened in recent years and the horror stories that can be read online seem to be mostly a thing of the past. We had two pilots and the plane seemed to be in good condition.

Galapagos Islands

Disclaimer: this review will be very long. However, the Galápagos Islands largely deserve it. The first site inscribed on the list is an exceptional one. My expectations were immeasurable (after all, I am a biologist, a birder and a scuba diver, the Galápagos should be a paradise for me!), but they have been surpassed! Story day by day.

Days 1-2: LogisticThe first two days were filled with travel and acclimatisation

Guanajuato

Guanajuato

Guanajuato is a fascinating city. I stopped there for three days during my Mexican trip in 2019. I was charmed by its eclectic architecture, narrow, steeply sloping streets and breathtaking views. The most remarkable buildings are la Basílica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato, el Teatro Juárez and la Universidad de Guanajuato. After arriving late from Guadalajara the day before, I spent my second day in Guanajuato walking around the city from west to east, from the fascinating and very creepy Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato (I love creepy attractions, I'm quite the target audience for this museum, but I was still a bit disturbed) to the relaxing Presa De La Olla. As specified by other visitors, the view from the Monumento Al Pipila is well worth the climb

Luis Barragán House and Studio

Luis Barragán House and Studio

I visited Casa Luis Barragán during my stay in Mexico City in March 2019. Since my day-to-day itinerary was not planned long in advance, I only tried to buy my ticket online a few days before my visit. To my surprise, there were no tickets available for several weeks. I therefore went to the house at the scheduled time for the visit in English. I was able to buy a last-minute ticket at the exorbitant price of 400 pesos (I didn't agree to double that amount in order to take pictures, you'll have to deal with the horrible façade of the house). I don't know if they keep some tickets to sell them the same day or if some ticket holders didn't show up.
