Primeval Beech Forests

Summer holidays with my son ticking of all that Macedonia has to offer and a bit of Albania. Of course with the Beech Forest listed for 2021 (I think it should) I wanted to go as we wanted to make some hikes anyway. UNESCO gives coordinates N41 45 06 E20 35 23 for the center. Good for me and it has 168ha with a 200ha buffer zone. I made it to about 200 meters from N41 45 06 E20 35 23 as it was exactly on a slope so couldn't reach it.

How to get there? It's the REAL [...]

Markovi Kuli (T)

Markovi Kuli (T)

When I drove from Skopje to Lake Ohrid I made a stop in Prilep for a visit to Markovi Kuli. Let me start with the fact that it would be better to include it as Natural & Cultural? There is an old fort on the top and a beautiful old monastery as well. It's all within the boundaries proposed. A LARGE sign is at the foot of the mountain where you go to the fort where it clearly states it's on the tentative list :-) I drove up to the fort as far as I could with a sedan. Don't park at the sign just drive until the road gets to bad. At the top I spend an hour or so enjoying the view.

The last remaining real jungle temple I would say. It's an "easy" day trip from Siem Reap as the roads have improved (2019 status). Its still a 3 hour drive though and still best be done in a 4x4 as it's simply more comfortable. There are 3 main spots to explore. Keep in mind that this city was once much larger as Angkor! First the elephant temple (Prasat Damrei) which is just in front of the baray. It has now an active hindu temple on the top. 2 beautiful elephants remain. I then recommend to visit first the main temple Prasat Bakan (the only place which has entrance fee of a few USD). It's a huge complex but the entrance gate is most beautiful (complete). A LOT is in ruins and a lot was looted but still many carvings can be seen

Médina de Sfax (T)

Médina de Sfax (T)

Difficult difficult to say yes or no to become a WHS. We already have the Medina of Tunis and Sousse which I also visited. They are touristy. Sfax is authentic. I was the only western guy there as I didn't see any other tourist the 4 hours I walked through the Medina. In Sfax you can really see the local life and how it all goes. I love that. The narrow streets, the people and the smell. There are a few old houses open for museum and looking at the guest books they don't get many visitors. Dar Jallouli is the most famous. These old houses have beautiful courtyards. Of course there is a kashbah as well. Old mosques and the wall which is still very complete from what I could see

The Ancient Capitals of the Kingdom of Tonga (T)

The Ancient Capitals of the Kingdom of Tonga (T)

I enjoyed the two parts of this TWHS inscription. Each country deserves I think at least 1 WHS and for Tonga the ancient capitals can be one for sure.

Ha'amonga ‘a Mau'i Historic Park: This park has two structures. A trilithon and a stone which is said to be the kings throne. They are over 10 centuries old from the time the capital was located there. I had a look for maybe 20 minutes as that's all that it takes. But it's interesting to see how on such a small island in the middle of the pacific this was constructed.
