These 40 nominations are a pool of candidates that could be "dark horse" submissions over the next couple years. Several, based on reports were on our radar, but never materialized. Others have been getting assistance by the Advisory bodies and have received funds to develop a nomination dossier. Moreover, there are quite a few "incomplete" or "failed" nominations listed here as well.

"The Ethiopian Minister of Culture and Tourism also noted the finalization of the registration dossiers of the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Dire Shiek Hussien, Holqa Sof Omar and Melka Kuntre, in accordance with the requirements of the institution."

Does this mean we could see 3 Ethiopian nominations coming soon? Perhaps even 2019 or 2020?

Durian:
Central Axis of Beijing for 2035!

Has something been lost in translation on that one?

I know ICOMOS is seeking more rigorous nomination files.
But a 17 year preparation time is probably over egging it slightly :)

Huangguoshu Waterfall - This would have been a shoo-in nomination (as natural site competion inChina is less competitive than cultural) if not for the one country nomination rule change that's supposed to be effective next year.

"Over the past two decades, however, Huangguoshu officials have pushed hard to change all that. In 2017, they renewed plans to apply for UNESCO World Natural Heritage status, aiming for a 2020 nomination."

Yeah, this might be something lost in translation. I would not be surprised if this nomination comes sooner. The "purge" on making establishments in downtown Beijing to look like more traditional already started last year. Lots of storefronts and hutong areas on the proposed buffer zone were already made into brick structures.

Zeynel Abidin Mosque Complex and Mor Yakup (Saint Jacob) Church (Turkey)

Late 2019 inscription does not make sense to me. Perhaps this will be the official nomination for 2021?

It seems that Zambia's Barotse Cultural Landscape (despite some risks posed by the Zambezi river), referred in 2014, is on its way to apply again to become a World Heritage Site. There is no indication on when will that happen.

"The King of the Barotse Land and the communities confirmed their support to the finalisation of the nomination dossier of the Barotse Cultural Landscape, as requested by the World Heritage Committee in Decision 38 COM 8B.19 (Doha, 2014)."

Iles Marquises (France) are still pursuing a nomination in the near future:
http://outremers360.com/culture/unesco-nouvelle-etape-pour-la-candidature-des-iles-ma rquises-au-patrimoine-mondial-de-lhumanite/

This means France has a lot of aspirants queuing for the single spot available: Nimes, Courdouan, Martinique, Carnac, Marquises, Nice, D-day beaches, Mercantour, Terres Australes, Metz, Spa towns, WWI sites.
