Full name of site: Baikonur Cosmodrome/ Cape Canaveral Air Force Base and Kennedy Space Centre
Country: Kazakhstan (& Russia) & USA (There may be a few problems with co-operation and a joint nomination of potentially secret sites in these countries, also due to the nature of the sites there are ongoing changes which may not sit well with the UNESCO model of heritage preservation)
Short description of site (also include multiple locations if applicable): These are the two major Space Centres from which the USSR and the USA pioneered the process of space exploration, bringing forward perhaps the single biggest leaps in technological development and scientific understanding in human history.
Criteria (cultural, natural, mixed): c ii. Both sites represent one of the greatest leaps forward in technological achievement in human history.
Outstanding universal value / comparative analysis: These two sites are the most important bases from which manned and unmanned space exploration has been conducted since the mid 20th century.
The space race brought massive scientific advances not only limited to Astrology but also encompassing all scientific fields. The massive leaps in technology that were brought about as part of the development of space exploration have vastly effected nearly all aspects of technological devices from the mid 20th century onwards. The centres of the other space agencies China, Europe, Brazil etc, do not match the importance of these two sites.
