Full name of site: Vers une architecture: Major Buildings of le Corbusier

Country: France and India

Short description of site (also include multiple locations if applicable): The tentative lists of many countries included lots of Le Corbusier buildings however I have limited this to the four most important projects realised by le Corbusier, in chronological order; Villa Savoye, Poissy-sur-Seine – Unite d'Habitation, Marseille – Chappelle Notre Dame du Haute, Ronchamp – Government Buildings and parks of Chandigarh. The inclusion of other buildings may illustrate his international influence however it may lead to some very lacklustre and unimportant buildings ending up on the list.

Criteria (cultural, natural, mixed): Cultural, i. (Masterpiece of 20th century architecture) ii. (displays an exceptional testimony to the development of architecture in the 20th century) iv. (exceptional examples of modernist architecture)

Outstanding universal value / comparative analysis: Le Corbusier is the most influential architect of the 20th century, his works were of great importance to the development of ideas in architecture as well as urban planning and had a huge influence throughout the world.
The works of many other architects working in the 20th century have been inscribed on the WHL, many of them had little impact on the wider architectural world, only Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe of the already inscribed architects would come close the prominence of Le Corbusier. many of the already inscribed works are from architects of only limited/ regional appeal.
These four projects represent the finest points of his career Villa Savoye illustrates his famous five points of architecture as put forward in his manifesto Vers une architechture. Unite d'Habitation shows his major focus on creating solutions to housing people in a modern city, Notre Dame du Haut illustrates the mastery of form and materials that enabled him to create shapes which have defined design in the 20th century. Chandigarh is the only place where is full ideas on town planning have been realised.

Le Corbusier is not my favourite architect however the influence that his works have had on modern architecture are unparalleled.

Yes - supported. I wonder if it will get on anyway this year? I have seen Ronchamp and Chandigarh. The latter is very "run down" -but then no architecture lasts ell if not cared for and certainly not "modern"!!

Last January France and 6 other countries have submitted about 20 Corbusier buildings as a serial and transboundary nomination for inclusion in 2009, according to
this Belgian newspaper
