I would like to make another proposal to fill the IUCN gap of White's Somali-Masai regional centre of endemism.
It is made of two Kenyan TWHS fully included in this biome: The Meru Conservation Area and Tsavo Parks and Chyulu Hills Complex.
https://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5509/
https://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5515/

Both explicitly mention it in their respective official TWHS description:

"The Meru Conservation Area (MCA) lies in the Somali-Maasai Regional Centre of Endemism, an area of some 1.87 million square kilometers, extending from north-eastern Somalia to north-eastern Tanzania and including much of north-eastern Kenya, south-eastern Sudan, parts of Ethiopia and north-eastern Uganda."

Both sites are widely regarded as well preserved and could fill this gap. So far the list includes the following WHS that belong to this "regional centre of endemism": Ngorongoro and Serengeti (Tanzania), Lake Turkana and Mount Kenya (Kenya), Omo and Awash (Ethiopia) - Maybe a new connection here?
However, this did not satisfy IUCN which still regarded this large biome as underrepresented, specifically mentioning Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya in this regard. The southern part in Tanzania is probably already well represented. The Ethiopian sites already inscribed are merely cultural, although they would have probably made it as mixed sites. The only Ethiopian natural TWHS Bale Mountains is not within this region. Importantly, Masai-Mara NP in Kenya does not fall within this region either.

I would also like to second Solivagant's proposal of the Nok culture sites in Nigeria.

Full name of site: Dahlak Marine National Park
Country: Eritrea
TWHS?: no
Short description of site: The park covers a part of Northern Red Sea Region of Eritrea. It includes part of the Dahlak archipelago and the surrounding waters. It features a well preserved coral reef and Red Sea endemism.
http://www.eritreaembassy-japan.org/data/State_of_the_Coast_2006-2007_FULL.pdf
It is comparable to Sanganeb (Sudan).
Criteria: Natural

I know our two weeks of Africa are over, but couldn't help but thinking about more missing sites in Africa.

So far we only have a few archaeological sites on our approved list:
Yeha (Ethiopia), Benin Iya (Nigeria) and Qoahito (Eritrea).

Sites that have been proposed but not approved are:
Tenzug-Tallensi (Ghana), Bigo (Uganda), Oursi ha-beero (Burkina Faso)

I would like to further propose Surame (Nigeria), which is often compared with Great Zimbabwe. It is a later site, constructed in the 16th century. It is often described as the most massive stone construction in Africa and features well preserved city walls. It is on the Nigerian tentative list.

According to http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=23110&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html we should move Djibouti (!) and South Sudan (!) to Arab States (although I do not agree with such a distribution...)

Assif:
The Meru Conservation Area and Tsavo Parks and Chyulu Hills Complex.

Assif:
Dahlak Marine National Park

I support these three proposals.

And Malta seems to be in that list as well...

Some countries seem to be listed twice. Malta is also on the European/North American list:
http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=23043&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html
And South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia and Djibouti (and all North African Arab states) are also on the African list:

Yup. This came up earlier in the discussion (see page 11). For clarity, the decision was to have Somalia and Sudan fall under the Arab States, while Djibouti and South Sudan would be evaluated here under Africa. Malta falls under Europe for its World Heritage Sites.

Missing countries, different from missing regions or thematic categories, should not necessarily be a factor in considering missing sites. However, it might be worthwhile to look at countries with no WHS or very few and see if we could find viable candidates for them.

Burundi - no WHS, no proposals for top missing
Angola - 1 WHS, 3 proposals
Cape Verde - 1 WHS, no proposals
Comoros - no WHS, 1 proposal
Congo R - 1 WHS, no proposals
Djibouti - no WHS, 4 proposals
Equatorial Guinea - no WHS, 2 proposals
Eritrea - 1 WHS, 2 proposals
Eswatini - no WHS, 1 proposal
Gabon - 1 WHS, 4 proposals
Guinea - 1 WHS, 2 proposals
Guinea Bissau - no WHS, 1 proposal
Lesotho - 1 WHS, no proposals
Liberia - no WHS, 2 proposals
Mozambique - 1 WHS, 4 proposals
Rwanda - no WHS, 1 proposal
Sao Tome and Principe - no WHS, 2 proposals
Sierra Leone - no WHS, 1 proposal
South Sudan - no WHS, 2 proposals
Togo - 1 WHS, 1 proposal
Zambia - 1 WHS, 3 proposals

Other countries that are probably highly underrepresented:
Botswana - 2 WHS, 3 proposals
Cameroon - 2 WHS, 3 proposals
CAR - 2 WHS, 1 proposal
Chad - 2 WHS, 2 proposals
Namibia - 2 WHS, 8 proposals
Nigeria - 2 WHS, 10 proposals

OK — I think it may be good if everyone can be on the same page regarding the process. We had spoken before about a two week nomination process for each region. For Africa, that window ended last weekend. Nan had suggested a voting period be held after we finish looking at a particular region, while the sites are fresh in forum member's minds. Is this how folks want to proceed? If so, do we want to hold the vote within the individual topic for the region, or start a separate voting topic? Is there a need for any type of curated list of sites eligible for the vote (beyond the spreadsheet that Els and Nan have graciously put together)? Should the vote be held under a confined space of time (i.e. one or two weeks)?

I will move this to the process discussion topic and "close" Africa for now to new submissions.
