To celebrate the event :-
"UNESCO World Heritage Appfree for one day
Attention all iPhone and iPad users: on Wednesday, 16 November 2011 the UNESCO World Heritage application (app) will be available for free on iTunes.
Download the app from the iTunes page here
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/unesco-world-heritage/id412183802?mt=8
What can you do with the app?
Use the UNESCO World Heritage app to explore all the World Heritage sites at home or while on your travels, choosing your favourites and marking them off as you visit them.
The app is published by Harper Collins Publishers and developed by Aimer Media in partnership with UNESCO World Heritage Centre."

Normally 2.99 - it might be worth having (if of course you have an iPad or iPhone)

Well, I wouldn't want to pay 2.99 for it - but then I hate paying for Apps (or e-Books) but, I guess, it is worth having for free on one's iPod and iPad for immediate reference without having to connect via 3G or Wifi. But, beyond that, there isn't really much "added value"

A couple of immediate points
a. It is only up-to date as far as 2010 inscriptions. Whether they intend keeping up to date I don't know - I think the Collins book has only been updated once since publication and this probably has to wait for any further book update.
b. A surprisingly (and disappointingly!!) large number of the sites have no photos on the App - just a map of their location, together with the instruction "View available images on the UNESCO website" and an arrow linking directly to the Web page - IF of course you are connected to the Web!!!! This seems somewhat to defeat the object of the App (immediate off line access to the information)! As far as I can see, on every one of these sites without a photo on the App, the photo on the UNESCO Web site is has a limited copyright (including in some cases with UNESCO itself and sometimes jointly with a UNESCO employee). It would seem that those "rights" do not extend to including the photo(s) on a downloadable App. I find it amazing that UNESCO doesn't have a FULL set of photos of every WHS for free use - you would have thought that it would have insisted that every States Party provides such a set of photos. That also explains why Collins had to search around the web sites of stock photos (with mixed success) to find photos for its book. Given that both the book and the App have been produced with UNESCO support (and, presumably, some financial return??) you would have thought UNESCO would have provided the photos!!

I recently updated all my downloaded Apps for my iPod and have noted that the above App has been updated for 2011 additions.

I also note that, if you operate it with an Internet connection on (The App does work stand alone of course) then this app has a rather nice direct link to Google Maps (Satellite view) for all (??) WHS - which I don't think the UNESCO Web site has? They have problems with sites with multiple locations however and as far as I can see always choose just one.

There also seem to be a few more sites with photos than I remembered on first view (though many of those only have 1 photo) - but still a disappointing number of sites where it merely provides a link to the UNESCO site.

Herewith another free App for iPad, iPod and iPhone.
This time for "World Oceans Day"
It covers those WHS categorised as "Maritime" (Itself an interesting list)
Unlike the previous App which was only free on World Heritage Day it looks as if this is free all the time. It was only released on June 6 (2 days ago)
It isn't wonderful but provides a useful set of links and additional information about some of the sites and is worth having access to/looking through.

Nice little app. Made me think of WH top trumps. I think the WHC needs an online shop!
