The Porticoes of Bologna (Italy)

https://www.ilrestodelcarlino.it/bologna/cronaca/portici-bologna-unesco-1.6408708

Google Translate says "Postponed" - is it a Referral or Deferral? I think the latter. Maybe the Italian speakers here can tell for sure?

We should have most documents on May 31st (unless I am mistaken)

It seems it will be a few days later, according to the IUCN website:
IUCN World Heritage Evaluations 2020 and 2021
WHC/21/44.COM/INF.8B2 (to be released in ca. early June)
WHC/21/44.COM/INF.8B2.ADD (to be released in ca. mid-June)

Maybe June 4th? That would match a pretty similar timeline in the past.

Maybe a specific day of the week? In 2019 it was on a Monday. (Or maybe we are reading too much into it)

I am often wrong, but I got the impression of Deferral or Not Inscribe (perhaps withdrawn). Based on past examples from the Italian delegation, overturning a referral or deferral is not a problem. The Prosecco Hills was evaluated by ICOMOS as "Not Inscribe", but was overturned for inscription after a vote.

Quotes like "recognized the potential of the site" makes me think the Italian delegation is "sugarcoating" a fairly negative evaluation. Italy would not talk about 2022 and beyond unless it was deferral or "not inscribe". I lean toward the later!

Africa (4)

Perhaps a milestone worth noting, if (perhaps a big if) the 4 African nominations are inscribed this July there will be 100 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Africa (not including Arab States).

Ah, well-spotted! I've looked at that page many times but never noticed it (the info may have been added recently).

Ribeira Sacra pulls out their candidacy for this year, due to a "negative" report from ICOMOS.

https://www.lavozdegalicia.es/noticia/cultura/2021/06/04/ribeira-sacra-aplaza-carrera-patrimonio-humanidad/0003_202106G4P37991.htm

And if I understand this correctly, the other Spanish nomination, Site of the Retiro and the Prado in Madrid, got a negative report from ICOMOS aswell, the main reasons being air pollution from motor traffic and a nonexistent historical justification to couple both properties in the nomination. Their proposal is to remove the Retiro park from the nomination file and nominate just the Prado, while the Spanish state party insists on pushing on with the full nomination, since "it would be impossible to separate the two sites."

It was always going to be a recommendation fro inscrition, but it is great when we get a genuine world class site inscribed.

Also a good year for niche modernist architects in less visited capital cities it seems.

You were quick to spot those, Job. Just half an hour before the official documents starting leaking. Probably all countries participating received them this morning? They are still not on the UNESCO website.
