Kuwait is making an impassioned case for ignoring the ICOMOS decision. The oasis was vital to shaping the peninsula and saving so many peoples who used the oasis in their travels. Al-Ahsa is apparently the largest and most famous in the world.

"You evaluators know nothing about living in this sort of landscape and just don't value it properly" - that cultural mismatch again between developed "West" and other views of the World

The field mission there was lead by Alaa Elwi El-Habashi (Egypt) (-> they do try to seek appropriate people to send there, just to prevent this kind of comments)

I will be VERY interested to see where China places its support - will be critical I feel!!!!

And it supports Kuwait's amendment!

It may be the "largest" and the "most famous" but they can't just ignore the problems ICOMOS pointed out about protection and management, badly focused inscription criteria etc.

It will be interesting to see if ICOMOS fire this gun when they reply.
As throughout this WHC so far the European etc countries take a back seat -they seem very reluctant to "stand up and be counted" in opposition to the African/Arab nexus

Unfortunately, past WHC decisions have shown they are willing to ignore significant problems ICOMOS points out.

ICOMOS now tries to clarify that it never said the oasis had NO value - simply that it didn't have the value as claimed. If that was the case why didn't it recommend Referral for a reformulation of the nomination???

Al-Ahsa Oasis is inscribed, despite the ICOMOS concerns.

The delegate from Saudi Arabia thanked for "having inscribed". So it means Inscribed?

It must have been inscribed. The revised OUV statement showed the criteria at which it was inscribed
