Oh, will we see some action in 2022? Unfortunately, I could not read the full story as it is for subscribers only.
So the Russian chairman has resigned, and a Saudi may take over ... will they prep for next year (Thailand) or rush a WHC 2022 in before the end of the year?

Seems bizarre to me that the appointment of a replacement chair, should one resign, is decided on their position (in English) in the alphabet. As I understand the above:
a) Saudi Arabia has to decide whether they wish to take up the chair, and then
b) there will be an extraordinary meeting in the next few weeks to decide how to progress.

So almost impossible for the 2022 session to be held in 2022. I think their options are either hold an additional session earlier in 2023 or combine 2022 and 2023 sessions. The latter seems far more likely to me with the 2020-21 precedent (though KSA may want the kudos of hosting a session, which I'm sure they probably could manage. They do not have any nominations for consideration however)

I guess they can process that also fast.

"Une réunion extraordinaire devrait avoir lieu dans les semaines suivantes au cours de laquelle seront fixés la date et le lieu de la prochaine «session ordinaire» qui «pourrait se tenir au premier semestre 2023», a-t-on appris auprès de l'Unesco."

Translation:
"An extraordinary meeting should take place in the following weeks during which the date and place of the next "ordinary session" will be fixed, which "could be held in the first half of 2023", we learned from Unesco."

These observations are supported by this English-language article by The Guardian, the first article on the matter I believe.

Oh! Is this the result of recent diplomatic discussions between Thailand - Russia - Saudi Arabia during APEC 20222 in Bangkok?
