Vila Viçosa, Renaissance Ducal Town (Portugal)

Anyone who tuned in for recent WHC sessions will recognize Portugal's representative (pictured in article). Looks like he is making a final visit to all locations in Portugal's official nomination dossier for 2020.

Is there really any choice when it comes to the quality of the nominated site?

Scrovegni Chapel would be a shoo-in, the hills another long debate and lead to referral.

One more reason why Mount Mantalingahan needs to be inscribed soon and I dunno why our government is taking a looong time to finalize the dossier.

Hi winterkjm, thanks for posting the updated list. I have been looking for sources that Mt Mantalingahan is pushing through in 2020 (given that they submitted incomplete documents in 2019). Any source that you can share?

Glad that there are a number of sites being nominated for inscription from Southeast Asia! It's about time!

It's difficult to confirm several nominations posted below. Part of what we do is educated guessing for certain regions or countries that do not have much media reports around world heritage. Most of Europe, Northeast Asia, and some of the Arab States are more or less confirmed and we can expect most nominations to show up for 2020. However, some countries in Latin America, Africa, and South East Asia are typically harder to confirm.

I am becoming doubtful of these nominations, as we've heard nothing for quite some time.
The Rise of Systematic Biology (Sweden)
Ahlat Selçuklu Cemetery (Turkey)

I have found little or nothing to confirm with 100% accuracy (as of late) that these nominations files are complete.
Myauk-U Archaeological Area and Monuments (Myanmar)
Mt. Mantalingahan Protected Landscape (Philippines)

Sorry to disappoint in regards to Mt. Mantalingahan. Nevertheless, it still has a decent chance of being submitted for 2020, there just is not a whole lot of media reports generally for nominations from the Philippines.

Myauk-U Archaeological Area and Monuments (Myanmar)

A potential problem with any Nomination for Mrauk-oo could be the fact that it is situated in the middle of Rohingya territory (or at least what was once Rohingya territory before the recent killings and expulsions.)
Even if Myanmar put together a compelling Nomination/Management plan would ICOMOS do the on site visit (Myanmar would of course guarantee their safety but there is still the PR aspect!!) and would at least some members of the WHC stomach it! Remember the Rohingya are Muslim so the Middle East Cabal on the WHC wouldn't exactly be likely to support Myanmar.
We were due to visit it during our Myanmar trip in Nov 2012 - but the Myanmar authorities wouldn't let us go there!!
