Durian:
This is a good news and a bad news for the same time. I checked the Japanese news, all the report is the same that only the island of Okinoshima will be inscribed for its archaeological value and the name of the site will change to Okinoshima, island of god. If only Okinoshima island is WHS, so no woman will be allowed to visit this site similar to Greece's Mouth Athos! ICOMOS does not care about the issue of discrimination at all. This news also hurt feeling of locals who worship Okinoshima god islands as a single spirit that located in 3 holy shrines, seperating inscription of the holy sites with only one shrine is an unacceptable for locals, as ICOMOS seem to be not care on cultural or local belief. Also in my opinion it will effect economic and tourism opportunities, if only inaccessible Island is incribed, how they can make profit!
From the news, Japanese government is ready to fight with ICOMOS and will lobby WHC to inscribe at least two more shrines on another island and the one on mainland Kyushu which are accesible by public, by using cultural link that locals considered the 3 shrines are one entity of Okinoshima god. This will repeat the Fujisan case that the Japanese insist to add Miho No Matsubara, a small pine peninsular to be a part of WHS.
I agree. In this instance, ICOMOS is being willfully moronic.
